What Is a Baby and Child Care Helper?

A baby and child care helper is a domestic helper whose agreed responsibilities include supporting the daily care of a baby or child. Duties may include milk preparation, bottle cleaning, diaper changing, bathing, baby-food preparation, feeding, sleep routines, safe play, child-related laundry, school preparation and parent updates.

A domestic helper should not automatically be presented as a trained nanny, nurse or early-childhood educator unless her qualifications and experience are properly verified.

Newborn care

Safety, Feeding and Hygiene

Baby safety is more important than speed. Employers should demonstrate safe holding, feeding position, bottle hygiene, bathing, sleep instructions, chemical storage, small-object hazards and emergency reporting.

The helper should not independently alter milk type, formula ratio, feeding quantity, feeding schedule, medicine or supplements. She should not introduce new food without parental approval.

Parents should demonstrate handwashing, bottle cleaning, surface cleaning, diaper disposal, baby-clothing separation, feeding-equipment cleaning and safe food storage.

Night Duties and Rest

Night care must be discussed before confirmation. Clarify whether the helper sleeps near the baby, how often night assistance is expected, who handles feeding and how daytime rest will be adjusted. Repeated night work without recovery can increase safety risks.

Play, Discipline and Parent Communication

A helper may support reading, songs, safe floor play, drawing, puzzles, supervised outdoor activities and simple language practice. Parents should set rules for screens, outdoor areas, photos, snacks and discipline.

Physical punishment, threats, humiliation, locking a child alone, withholding food and frightening the child are unacceptable. The helper should follow the parents’ approved approach.

First-time candidates may be motivated and flexible but need more training. Experienced candidates may be more confident, but their experience must still match the child’s age and the family’s routine.

Workload and Two-Helper Households

When the baby requires attention, non-essential household tasks may need to wait. A realistic priority order is baby safety, feeding and hygiene, essential meals, essential cleaning and then additional duties.

Families with twins, several children, intensive elderly care, significant night duties or a large household may need one primary baby-care helper and one primary household-support helper.
